About Project Ujire

Focal points: Renewable energy, micro enterprise for women, process
efficiency, base of the pyramid
Project Ujire is a volunteer service project of the Dow Corning Global Citizen
Service Corps.
Through Project Ujire, a team of
Dow Corning employee volunteers will offer knowledge, expertise and
hands-on support to organizations that are working to improve the quality of
life at the base of the pyramid.
Timeline:

Project Descriptions:
Engineering/Design – The Dow Corning team will work with SDM College and will speak
with areca nut farmers and observe the current machines and methods used to
peel areca nuts. Based on their research, they will develop a proposal for
improved methods that may eventually result in a new and better machine for the
local areca nut farmers.
Application/Testing – The team will work with SELCO, a social
enterprise that works to enhance the quality of life of underserved households
through sustainable energy solutions and services. They will research and
assess which technologies may be best suited for use in decentralized solar
applications.
Commercial & Supply/Value Chain – The team will work with SIRI, an
organization that provides a program centered on the economic empowerment of
women through micro-enterprise. The team will focus efforts on a garment-making
enterprise to enhance all facets of the program including end-to-end design,
supply chain, marketing, sales and purchasing.
