Barry Site Community Advisory Panel 2008 Annual Report
The following provides a brief summary of the Community Advisory Panel (CAP)
meetings in 2008.
January
The CAP reviewed the roles and expectations of CAP members. They also heard
what each company manufactures and an explanation of the common acronyms was
given.
February
Occupational Health and medical emergencies was the topic for February. The
CAP heard how Dow Corning works to maintain healthy employees. The First
Response system in Barry was outlined.
March
Cabot provided an insight into uses and sales of fumed silica at the March
meeting.
April
At April’s meeting the CAP heard about the work of the Emergency Planning
Unit with a presentation from the local EPU officer.
May
The local Environmental Health Officer attended the CAP meeting and gave a
presentation on the results of some of the air monitoring that has been carried
out.
June
In June the CAP visited the Dow Corning education centre. The education
officer explained what programmes had been going on there since the building
was opened.
September
In September, the panel joined with Sully CAP and heard about the work of
the National Poisons Information Service (Cardiff).
October
Site safety during shutdowns was the topic for October’s meeting. Cabot
site manager explained the work that must take place to ensure a safe
maintenance shutdown.
November
In November the CAP learned how to conduct simple risk assessments and
performed their own assessment assessing everyday household activities.
December
The panel members attended the annual Christmas meal.
Monthly
Calls to the Helpline were reviewed each month.
Changes to the CAP membership in 2008
The student representatives stood down in 2008.
