Community Advisory Panel 2010 Annual Report
The following provides a brief summary of the Community Advisory Panel (CAP)
meetings in 2010.
January
The CAP meeting was cancelled this month because of adverse weather.
February
The guest speaker for the February meeting was the Harbor Master for the Barry
docks. The CAP heard how the dock operations work and bring in ships to
port.
March
The March meeting focused on VOPAK operations and the CAP learned how VOPAK
Terminal Windmill site functions and how it fits with the global operations of
the company.
April
The Vale of Glamorgan’s Civil Protection Unit presented its plans for a review
of the Off-Site Plan that they manage. The Plan details actions and plans in
the event of a major emergency at any one of the Barry Industrial Complex
companies. The Plan must be reviewed every 3 years.
May
In May the CAP heard an overview on the environmental performance of Cabot
Carbon. Information on how the site manages water, CO2, energy and waste were
discussed.
June
A general discussion meeting took place in June with CAP members.
The Barry and Sully CAPs joined together and became one CAP from September
2010. It was agreed that the CAP meetings would be every other month from
October 2010.
September
In September, newly formed combined CAP group heard how Cabot Carbon is
studying climate change and improving energy conservation. The Climate Change
Levy was discussed and how Cabot is able to be part of that scheme.
October
The combined CAP heard how Human Factors are a major consideration under health
and safety legislation. A representative from the UK’s Health and Safety
Executive gave a thought provoking insight into the topic of Human Factors and
how companies are being asked to think about these aspects.
December
The panel members attended the annual Christmas meal.
Monthly
Calls to the Helpline were reviewed and discussed each month.
Changes to the CAP membership in 2010
The student representatives from a local Sixth Form became members of the
CAP. The Sully CAP member expanded the CAP members to 23 people. All
companies send one or two company representatives to each meeting.
