Concern for safety and safeguarding the environment is fundamental to the
way we operate the Barry site. Continuous improvement in environmental, health
and safety performance is a key goal for the site. We recognize that good
standards of performance in these areas will contribute not only to the success
of our business, but also to the well being of our neighbors, employees and
society.
Environment
The safekeeping of our environment is a core value of Dow Corning, upon
which the quality of life depends. Air, water and land around the site are
monitored constantly as part of our unrelenting drive to prevent and reduce
pollution. Our goal is zero spills and zero emissions, against which we measure
our performance and progress. We are also highly regulated by the UK Environment
Agency.
In 2006, the Barry site was granted its new Integrated Pollution Prevention
and Control (IPPC) permit. This specifies the maximum levels of pollution we
are allowed to release. The guidelines make sure that the amounts are
environmentally insignificant. Nevertheless we work to continually improve
on our performance.

Health and Safety
Safety is our highest priority and we work hard to ensure the safe operation
of our processes and the health and safety of our neighbors and our employees.
Our approach involves many layers of safety built into everything we do:
-
safe design of processes - to assess and eliminate risk prior to building
the plant
-
sophisticated computer controls and automatic alarms and shutdown systems
for our processes
-
regular audits of facilities and procedures
-
planned maintenance and inspections
-
safety training for all employees in safe working practices and
procedures
-
monitoring the health and safety of the working environment
-
regular exercises and drills for on site emergency response
-
procedures and information for off site response
The Health and Safety
Executive regulates us.

Responsible Care®
In line with all Dow Corning sites, we have adopted the international
Responsible Care® program as the foundation for our activities. The initiative
sets a framework for continual improvement in safety, health and environmental
performance. The program is totally voluntary.
