Nature Center and Education Center School Activities


Early Years

Discovering the Seasons

The education officer will lead the children around the center where they will meet a variety of wildlife using teddies and props.  The children will play games and do activities that will help them understand the seasons and discover what can be found at different times of year.

Content will vary throughout the year.  It is possible for groups to repeat this session at different times of the year to experience all of the seasons.

Available between March and November.  Timing: 4 hours

Teddy Bears Picnic

Children come with their teddy bears and learn about what we need to survive.  Children will participate in a range of sensory activities where they learn about nature and help their teddy to survive.

Available between March and October. Timing: 4 hours

Key Stage 2

Discovery Trail

Children go and find out what is living in Dow Corning's nature center.  They use binoculars to look for birds, get close to the trees and search for colors in the meadow.  Exact content will vary.

Available all year round. Timing: 1 hour

Eco-House

Visit our center and discover how we have used renewable energy.  Learn about sustainable development and the impact that we are having on the Earth.  By the end of the day, children will have made a pledge to make a change when they get home. 

Available all year round. Timing: 4 hours

Environmental Art and Craft

We have a wide selection of environmental art and craft that for a range of wildlife and seasons.  Children can spend time learning about the animals and then making something.  For example, designing and making their own minibeast, using what they have learnt about adaptations.

Available all year round. Timing:  Varies but approximately 1 hour per craft activity

Environmental Games

Children take part in a range of games to get them thinking about nature and the behavior and relationships that occur within it.

Available all year round. Timing: Up to 1 hour

Food Chains

Children are given animal cards and have to make their own food web.  They learn what happens if there is a break in the chain and how vital every living thing is.

Available all year round. Timing: Half hour

Identification Detectives

A range of natural objects are set out including skulls, bones, pictures, fruit and seeds which children take time to look at and identify using books and keys.  Exact content will vary.

Available all year round. Timing: Up to 1 hour

Discover Minibeasts

Children use a range of equipment to catch and identify invertebrates.  We use sweep nets, beating trays and traps, as well as searching under logs and stones.  Children spend time identifying and looking closely at their creatures after they have been caught.

Available March to October. Timing: 1 hour

Orienteering

Working in small teams, children use a map, grid references, and a compass to find clues that reveal a hidden message.

Available all year round. Timing: Approximately 1 hour

Pond Dipping

Children use nets to discover what is hiding beneath the surface of the water.  When they have finished, they bring their creatures in and look closely at them using our microscopes.

Available March to October. Timing: 1 hour

Problem Solving

Children work in teams to solve a number of problem solving exercises.  We encourage good team working skills that aids communication and listening skills.

Available all year round. Timing: Up to 2 hours

Children test their observation skills by firstly following a trail, counting man-made objects, and secondly doing a scavenger hunt for natural objects.

Available all year round. Timing: 1 hour

Secondary Schools

Comparing grasslands

Groups will learn about the importance of surveying and monitoring.  They will undertake a comparison study between grassland using quadrats and wild flower keys.

Age:  KS4 and A-level. Available March to October. Timing: 4 hours

Problem Solving

Children work in teams to solve a number of problem solving tasks.  We encourage good team working skills that aids communication and listening skills.

Age: KS3. Available all year round. Timing: Up to 2 hours

Wildlife Monitoring

Use a range of wildlife monitoring techniques to understand what wildlife is at the Nature Center:

  • Bird surveys
  • Vegetation surveys using quadrats
  • Pond dipping
  • Invertebrate monitoring – butterflies, moths, ladybirds, sweep netting and pitfall traps.

Age:  KS3 +. Available March to October. Timing: Up to 5 hours
