Barry site - named on Best Workplaces list 2008
The Barry site (together with the customer service center in
Meriden,UK) is one of the top 50 Best Workplaces in the UK. This comes
from the results of a survey of employees across Dow Corning's UK operations by
the Great Places to Work® Institute UK who compile the listing. The survey
measured trust between site leaders and employees as well as camaraderie and
pride within the company. Dow Corning Ltd is the only chemical manufacturer to
make the UK top 50 in 2008, and one of three companies based in Wales to make
the listing. It follows similar listings at Dow Corning sites in Belgium
and Germany in recent years. Read the Dow Corning press statement about this achievement.
Location
The 160-acre site is situated to the eastern part of Barry, South Wales, UK
in the county of the Vale of Glamorgan. With sea docks right next to the site
and excellent rail and road links to other parts of the UK and Europe, Barry
makes an ideal location for manufacturing. In fact, many of our finished
products are shipped from Barry docks direct to our customers in Asia,
Australia and Europe.
Historical Roots
The link with Barry and Dow Corning dates back to 1952 when manufacturing of
silicon-based materials first began. Under the joint-venture name of
Midland Silicones, Dow Corning and Albright & Wilson started making
silicon-based products. Dow Corning took complete ownership of the site in
1971. The site has seen significant investment through the years to create one
of the most modern and technically advanced silicones facilities in the world.
The Barry site is the largest plant operated by Dow Corning in Europe.
Serving customers globally
We are not only one of Dow Corning’s largest manufacturing sites, producing
a wide range of products, we are also an important center for research and

to protect cars and furniture, sealants that allow glass buildings to stay
together, as well as a huge number of other applications.
Dow Corning maintains a corporate ISO9001 registration. Tools to meet
customer requirements include: internal and external audits, a Quality
Notification system and Six Sigma methodology.
Site information and Nature Center
The Barry
site brochure (PDF size = 343 KB) provides information on the site's
activities in the community and explains our commitment to health, safety and
the environment. Our manufacturing process is also described in the brochure.
Printed copies are available from the site on request.
The site has recently created a Nature Center in which wildlife can
flourish. Set on a natural wetland area adjacent to the manufacturing site, the
area serves as a large fishing amenity with 2 large ponds. Reed beds and
meadowland complement the ponds and serve as extended habitats for many
different species of plants, animals and insects.
Overlooking the ponds is a new Education Center which will be used to host
school groups interested in learning about eco-systems and wildlife. The
building is as sustainable as possible with materials of construction being
sourced from managed forests or made incorporating eco-friendly
principles. Ground source heating, solar photovoltaics provide heat and power
while rainwater harvesting provides water for the restrooms.

Nature Center web page.
Our employees
The site currently employs approximately 600 people - from engineers,
research chemists, plant operators and trades personnel to safety specialists,
accountants, IT specialists and administration staff. Safety and the
environment are top priorities for the site and all employees are required to
undergo comprehensive safety and environmental training.
