Carrollton Site

Dow Corning Carrollton Site – Environment

The site has also focused on environmental sustainability, reducing air emissions by more than 90 percent since 1989, while more than doubling the production volume. As a partner with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, the site has planted native warm-season grasses to help create a wildlife habitat. In 2008, the site became a Master member in the KY EXCEL Environmental Leadership Program, a program for organizations that consistently demonstrate the improvement and protection of Kentucky’s environment above and beyond the state’s environmental requirements.

In 2008, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) recognized Dow Corning with a Responsible Care® Energy Efficiency Award for reducing CO2 emissions about the equivalent of 600 cars, and saving enough energy to heat 500 homes.

The Carrollton Site was selected for “Good control improves distillation efficiency” in the category of Significant Improvement in Manufacturing – Operating Unit. The energy used for distillation is typically one of the largest components of a site’s total energy usage. Many distillation columns operate the same way year after year, and not running at optimum conditions compounds energy losses.

Annualized energy savings from this project resulted in CO2 emissions reductions of almost 3,500 tons. To put this in perspective, the CO2 reduction is the same as getting over 600 cars off the road and the energy saved could heat nearly 500 Kentucky homes all year.

As an additional environmental outreach program, the Carrollton Site sponsors a 218-acre 4-Mile Outdoor Classroom where local students from Carrollton County can experience hands-on outdoor education. Elementary school students attend “Environmental Career Day” to learn about topics including wind energy, planting trees and solar energy.
