Minutes of Meeting -- Tuesday 6th March 2001


Members present:
Chuck Bond, Bud Carpenter, Maureen Donker, Greg Dorrien, Lin Dorman, Vic Finch, Connie Killingbeck, Steve LaLonde, Bob Markey, Jack Maddox, John Marsh, Beth Nash, Brenda Sauve, Dan Sorenson, Barb Stamiris, Eileen Starks

  • The minutes of the meeting held on February 6, 2001 were accepted, with the removal of a sentence in Section 3, Paragraph 1. Chuck committed to provide clarification at the April meeting.
    Start-up/Announcements:    Maureen & Chuck
    • A donation was made to the Health Sciences Library at MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland, on behalf of Dr. Will Wright.
    • Copies of the book “Forty Years of Firsts” were offered to any interested panel member.
    • Samples of DC 200 fl. were distributed to panel members.
    • Chuck provided an update on the Contract Negotiations. The current contract expires March 19, 2001. Both parties are optimistic that a good contract will be in place.
  • Jack presented the “State of the Plant Address”. His presentation included the Midland Plant Employment History, Midland Site OSHA Rate, Spills >10# SPC, Site Fires & Explosions, Mid. Site Total Air Emissions, Excluding Inert, Mid Site Emissions of Hazardous Air Pollutants, Mid Site Liquid & Solid Waste, Mid Site, On-Site Landfill & Liquid waste.
    • Highlights for 2000 included:
      • Proactive effort with local fire departments to conduct simulations of chemical releases. During these exercises, safety & loss prevention personal assisted in hypothetical incidents (i.e., tanker tipped over, leaking trailer, leaking drum inside trailer). 30-40 people were in attendance per each session.
      • No release with potential off-site impact
      • Good Labor Relations
      • Numerous expansions including rubber, organoland & silicone polyethers
    • Difficult challenges we faced in 2000 included:
      • Work Force Reduction
      • Expense Cutting
      • Voluntary Reduction Program
  • The panel discussed questions for the upcoming April meeting when Terry Miller from the Lone Tree Council will be our guest speaker.
    • What relationship do they have with DC? (strengths/weaknesses)
    • What relationship do they have with other plants locally?
    • Their comment on dioxin (from an environmental perspective)
      • Toboco Marsh
      • Project in New York (Dow Chemical)
    • What is the Lone Tree Council?
      • Mission & objective
      • Why are they viewed as an adversary?
      • Pollution decreased on environment?

 

Action: Brenda will send out copies of the article “Finalized a long way with Dioxin” with the March meeting minutes.
Action: Maureen will take the questions to Terry Miller, prior to our April meeting.

  • Maureen distributed copies of the CABOT proposals. The panel member’s reviewed them and accepted the proposal to have CABOT attend two meetings per year. Approximately in the October & March meetings.
    Action: Maureen will follow-up on arranging a tour of the CABOT facility for possibly the first Tuesday in June.
  • REMINDER: On March 26, there will be a special on PBS featuring Bill Moyer. The subject will be a special report on the Chemical Industry.
