Minutes of Meeting -- Tuesday 5th February 2002


Members present:
Chuck Bond, Maureen Donker, Lin Dorman, Greg Dorrien, Connie Killingbeck, Molly Lien, Jack Maddox, Bob Markey, Bob Marks, Brenda Sauve, Mike Snyder, Dan Sorenson, Barb Stamiris, Eileen Starks

Members absent:
Bud Carpenter, Steve LaLonde, Bob Marks, John Marsh, Brent McCumons, Beth Nash

  • The minutes of the meeting held on January 8, 2002 were approved.
    Start-up/Announcements:  
    • Tickets were available for the Dow Corning Women’s Challenger Tennis Tournament.    
    • Scott Daunheimer, Responsible Care Program Leader, has gathered input from the CAP but will not be completing the project for sometime due to other priorities.
    • Maureen asked if the panel was interested in hearing from the City of Midland regarding the tax issues with Dow Corning.  The panel members were in favor of this.  Bob Fisher will be joining us at the March 5th meeting.
    • Maureen and Chuck are working on the Annual Report for the DC Cap.  In an effort to reduce expense, color copies will not be published, but instead the report and a group photo will be put on the web.  A photo will be taken at 4:00p.m. on March 5th.  
    • The American Chemical Council will be publishing an article that will include some of our accomplishments as a Dow Corning CAP.  

 

  • State of the Plant Address
    • Jack presented the “State of the Plant Address”.  His presentation included the Midland Plant Employment History, Midland Site OSHA Rate, Spills >10# SPC, Site Fires & Explosions, Total Air Emissions, Excluding Inert, Emissions of Hazardous Air Pollutants, Liquid & Solid Waste, On-Site Landfill & Liquid waste.
    • Highlights for 2001 included:  
      • PCB remediation – clean out storm water system
      • Safety – our personal injuries were down 23% from last year
      • Good Labor Relations with the renewal of a 4 year contract
      • Exceeded our United Way goal at the Midland Site.
    • Difficult challenges we faced in 2001 included:  
      • Continued Expense Reduction – costs reduced by 12%
      • Chemical Industry Recession (declining sales)
      • Property Tax issue with the City of Midland
      • No Outcome/verdict on Chapter 11 status

 

ACTION ITEMS:  Jack will update the CAP on the number of position/employee reductions that took place at the Midland Site, and how many notifications are still remaining.

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS:  A representative from Right Associates will be joining us to explain how they assist Dow Corning employees that are separated from the company.
