Barry Promotes Energy Awareness and Action
The Barry site is showing its commitment to sustainability – by supporting
energy saving initiatives.
Lighting the way to energy savings
At home, it’s simple to turn off the lights to save energy when you leave a
room. It’s a bit more complicated at the 160-acre Barry site, but the energy
savings provide significant payback for the effort. The site has installed
long-life lamps that use time-out controls in low occupancy areas and switch
off unnecessary lighting during daylight hours. The reduction in energy use is
accomplished without compromising safety. Significant energy savings are
achieved while assuring that all lighting needs are addressed.
Sharing knowledge to make a difference
In conjunction with the UK’s Carbon Trust (a government-backed organization
working with companies to help them reduce carbon emissions), the Barry site
supported an energy awareness event for employees, businesses and government
representatives. The Energy Fair helped raise awareness about the environmental
impact of CO2 emissions on climate change and showed participants how they
could make a difference by saving energy.
Warm water for little hands
The Barry site is helping some young neighbors save energy. A donation made
to the Bute Cottage Nursery School contributed to the school’s installation of
solar panels to heat water. The panels are capable of heating enough water to
wash 80 pairs of little hands at the same time! The school is pleased about
saving electricity and equally delighted that the youngsters are learning about
energy conservation.
