In 2003, sealant packaging operations were found to be the largest waste
generator for the Elizabethtown site. The majority of the waste was generated
during changeovers from one sealant color to another on the packaging lines . A
number of recommendations were implemented, resulting in an impressive 40
percent reduction in the packaging waste generation rate. That decrease
occurred while production increased 60 percent over the same time frame!
Expired material, and scrap from production processes, were other sources of
waste at the site. Improved inventory management and several process
improvements have resulted in decreased waste. Less waste is better for the
environment – and for Dow Corning’s bottom line, which benefits from reduced
disposal costs and improved operational efficiency.
