Trapping Steam to Save Energy

Manufacturing plants often use steam to transfer heat in their production processes. When steam transfers its energy, it condenses into a liquid. Steam traps assist in capturing the liquid and recycling it back to the boiler. When a steam trap fails, it allows live steam to escape without transferring its energy - and we waste the natural gas that was used to create the steam. In other words, steam trap failure is like heating your home while the windows and doors are open – we lose energy without getting much of the heat.

Several Dow Corning plants have implemented steam trap programs to minimize the loss of steam, resulting in more efficient use of energy. Dow Corning Sustainability Principles guide the company’s operations globally. Shared learning among the plants allows Dow Corning to improve its environmental performance.

"Dow Corning has achieved success in many areas and we are working hard to duplicate that around the globe,"said Stephanie Burns, Dow Corning chairman, president and CEO, addressing the important topic of Sustainability. Read more about Sustainability at Dow Corning...
