Silicones Shining at the Speed of Light
From your cell phone camera flash to your car’s interior lighting, LEDs
(light-emitting diodes) are used in a multitude of appliances and applications.
As this market grows, manufacturers are looking at silicones to meet new design
needs for brighter, longer-lasting LEDs.
Dow Corning introduced a new, innovative product for LED applications – a
moldable material that combines the durability and transparency of a silicone –
to make hard lenses and other electronic components. Silicones are
exceptionally reliable because they transmit light well and retain optical
clarity despite high temperatures. They can also adhere to a number of
substrates, providing manufacturers incredible design flexibility.
“The value of an application like this goes far beyond the manufacturing and
design benefits. For example, brake lights using LED technology come on faster,
improving response time for the car behind you – and possibly avoiding an
accident,” said Marie Eckstein, vice president, general manager of Advanced
Technologies and Ventures.
