Broadening the Reach of the Sun
A new manufacturing facility in Santos Dumont, Brazil, is not only helping
to make solar energy more viable, it also represents a great development
opportunity for the community.
In 2006, Dow Corning established the advanced metallurgy facility.
The new plant will play a crucial role in Dow Corning’s contribution to
the solar industry, by offering a more economical grade of silicon. This will
help to address the shortage in silicon supply and broaden the reach of
sun technologies around the globe.
The Brazil facility is producing the first industrial scale silicon
feedstock material that can be blended with polycrystalline silicon. The
blended material is more economical and promises to relieve some of the
shortages of solar-grade silicon. This is an important achievement that
Dow Corning has been working toward for a number of years.
Dow Corning has invested millions in the facility. This investment supports
the Corporation’s vision to take the benefits of silicon to everyone,
everywhere.
