Dow Corning has worked to provide local villagers in Karegaon, India, with
an anganwadi. An anganwadi is a government-run crèche – or nursery school –
that provides nutrition, healthcare and education for children under the age of
six. The government’s goal is to have at least one anganwadi per village.

The Dow Corning team worked closely with leaders in the village, which is
near Dow Corning’s plant in Pune, India, to procure the land and construct a
building for 40 to 50 children. The completed anganwadi offers free preschool
education and basic nutritional supplements to underprivileged children, as
well as necessary vaccinations for children 0 to 3 years of age.
Dow Corning and the anganwadi were featured in a documentary film targeted
for national television to encourage private-sector contributions. During
filming, Dow Corning employees learned that the facility didn’t have toys for
the children. So, the Pune site initiated a toy donation drive to help meet
that need.
