Dow Corning’s site in Barry, Wales, has carried out extensive initiatives to
reduce certain targeted wastes with help from the Welsh Assembly
Government-funded sustainability experts at Envirowise.

| The site’s achievements include lowering its annual
waste by a factor of 10 on one process, and increasing plant efficiency by more
than 10 percent on another. The site has also reduced the reliance on a process
cleaning solvent by reusing a different solvent that is generated as a waste
byproduct elsewhere in the plant, thus reducing the overall amount of waste
solvent at the site. Using the basic principles of reduce, re-use and recycle
as a starting point, improvements were achieved by eliminating and reducing
waste at the source, followed by innovative by-product recovery and
re-use. |
