In 2007, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) presented two Responsible
Care® Energy Efficiency Awards to Dow Corning for Significant Improvement in
Manufacturing.
A team at the Carrollton, Ky., U.S. site identified an energy recovery
opportunity in one of its processes used to make silicones. Excess heat from a
process reactor could be captured and used to pre-heat materials going into the
same reactor. The team overcame design and engineering challenges in order to
implement this system, which has saved nearly 50 percent of the steam energy
used to heat the reactor.

The Midland site uses thousands of steam traps to keep its steam system
working. In 2007, a new maintenance program was adapted from another Dow
Corning location. Using this new program, the site was able to identify 147
traps that required maintenance. These repairs resulted in more than 130
million pounds of steam savings. At current boiler efficiency, this equates to
a savings of more than 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide – or, in terms of
automobile emissions, nearly 2,000 fewer cars on the road.
