A Dow Corning waste reduction activity in Seneffe, Belgium, celebrated
excellent results in 2007. After four years, the ratio of process scrap to
finished goods for the Emulsions and Antifoams production units in Seneffe was
successfully reduced from 4.2 percent to 0.8 percent. This represented a
decrease in environmental impact of 650 tons of waste volume per year.

The activity involved three phases. First, a Six Sigma project was conducted
to identify how waste was generated and to develop a new waste management
system for controlling the type and quantity of waste coming from each
production unit. Second, equipment was installed to filter silicones from water
in the waste stream. And third, a nitrogen flush was introduced into the
production units, to ‘push’ out any products left in the lines and recover them
as saleable goods before they could be diluted by water and enter the waste
stream.
