Dow Corning is sponsoring efforts of the International Polar Foundation
(IPF) to study climate change and sustainable materials at the Princess
Elisabeth Antarctic Station. The station is the world’s first zero-emission
research station and the first polar research station functioning entirely on
renewable energy (from wind turbines and solar panels). Researchers there will
advance understanding of the Earth’s ecosystem and climate change while testing
construction designs aimed at reducing environmental impact.

“We support the IPF’s mission to understand key
environmental and climate change factors,” said Peter Cartwright, Dow Corning
executive director for environment, health and safety. “The world needs
innovative approaches to address today’s complex environmental
challenges.”
In addition to supporting the station, Dow Corning was selected to provide
silicone sealant construction material for the project, offering an opportunity
to test the product in the most extreme of environments.
The pre-built Antarctic station was inaugurated in early September during a
four-day public display in Brussels, Belgium. It was then disassembled and
transported by ship to Antarctica, where assembly began late in the year. |
