The extreme temperature resistance of silicone rubber elastomers

Why silicone rubber may be the better choice

  • Long service life in adverse operating environments and weather conditions
    • Virtually unaffected by weather – rain, snow, humidity, ozone or the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays – for many years
    • Organic elastomers may become brittle and crack under prolonged exposure to the environment
    • Fluorosilicone elastomers resist degradation from fuels, oils, solvents and aggressive chemicals in extreme heat and cold
  • Wider operating temperature range – from – -40 to 316°C (-40 to 600°F), with special compounds functional down to –100°C (-148°F)
    • Many organic elastomers soften and deform irreversibly at temperatures >100°C (>212°F); they become brittle at temperatures <-25°C (<-13°F)
  • Inherently good electrical insulating qualities that do not change significantly under exposure to severe environmental stress, such as extreme heat and cold, low or high humidity, water immersion, oil, ozone, UV rays, air pollution
  • Excellent mechanical sealing performance with long-term flexibility, elasticity and resistance to aging, cracking and compression set
  • Wide range of choices in hardness, specific gravity, tensile strength, elongation, color pigments and flow properties
  • Selection of standard rubber bases and custom blends, primers, additives, cure mechanisms and fabrication options
