Growing regulation of VOCs in auto polishes and waxes

By 2005, the volatile organic content (VOC) in virtually every type of automotive wax and polish sold in the state of California for either home or institutional use will be regulated by the Consumer Air Resources Board (CARB) Consumer Products Program.

What’s more, other states are beginning to adopt similar measures. (Look for details in our next Update.) In the meantime, learn how these regulations could impact you. Download our CARB Regulations Tip Sheet.

High-value benefits overcome cost resistance to low-VOC waxes and polishes

Automotive polishes are typically formulated as oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions where the solvent assists in cleaning and eases application. Using CARB-compliant solvents can lead to more costly formulations. One way to compensate is to create products that are not only low-VOC but also address high-value consumer needs such as scratch remediation. Consider how formulations like these could add value to your VOC-reduction efforts:

• A CARB-compliant scratch concealer that delivers excellent gloss and durability and eliminates undesirable swirl marks

• A durable polish with detergent-resistant properties that is gentle enough for clear coats

For copies of these and other prototype formulations plus formulated samples, order our new Low-VOC Auto Care Formulating Kit*.

* Dow Corning's low-VOC sample formulations contain lower VOC (volatile organic compound) content than current standard solvent-based formulations. The volatile siloxanes used in these formulations are considered VOC-exempt by the California Air Resource Board's Consumer Products Program. When using our VOC-exempt volatile siloxanes with organic solvents, the formulator is responsible for complying with the VOC limits established by the CARB regulations.

VOC Q&A
What kinds of solvents does CARB classify as VOC-exempt?

• Solvents with low vapor pressures or high boiling points (LVP-VOCs) – comparatively slow to dry.

• Volatile methyl siloxanes, which are non-ozone depleting – fast drying.
