The marvels of microencapsulation
Today’s consumers are captivated by skin- and haircare products that feel,
smell, and look intriguing. One of the hottest new ways to engage their senses
is by combining the proven performance of silicones with other high-value
materials through the marvels of microencapsulation.
With microencapsulation delivery technology, it is possible to protect
unstable cosmetic actives, provide timed or sustained release, or combine
previously incompatible ingredients in a single formulation.
Microcapsules can contain pigments, fragrances, vitamins, healing actives,
and a variety of hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials. These materials remain
separated from the rest of the formulation, safe inside their microcapsule
“shells,” until they are released at the time of use. Silicone can be used in
the microcapsule, in the suspending medium, or in both.
By combining silicones and microencapsulation technology, it is possible to
create distinctive and surprising effects that go beyond the expected – like
colors and fragrances that blossom upon application or the appeal of “natural”
ingredients combined with the sensuous feel and easy spreadability of
silicone.
