Silicone gel protects water meter circuits from severe conditions

A water meter manufacturer has developed technology that enables utilities
implementing it to achieve up to 30% higher revenues. The technology can reduce
unaccounted-for water use by as much as 50%, and virtually eliminate the need
for costly meter maintenance programs.
To achieve this level of performance, the manufacturer goes to great lengths
to ensure the integrity and longevity of its designs. This includes protecting
electronic components and circuits against high-moisture environments,
fluctuating temperatures, dirt, and other contaminants.
When company engineers needed a coating to encapsulate the printed circuit
boards in a new piece of automated meter reading equipment, they chose an
easy-to-process, self-healing silicone gel. The silicone gel is able to perform
reliably through operating conditions that could include extended periods of
100% humidity, temperature swings of 38°C (100°F) or more, and exposure to fine
dirt and gravel from underground installations.
Protected by silicone and designed for accurate, durable service, the
company’s products are contributing to waste reduction and maximizing utility
revenues.
