Silicone Coatings for
Proven Protection
of PCBs

IMAGINE: Easily processed coatings for
reliable electronics

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) form the foundation for electronics in automotive, consumer electronics, communications and industrial and energy applications. Yet these PCBs are often exposed to damaging environmental factors, ranging from moisture, dust and harsh chemicals to extreme thermal cycling and vibration.

Formulated from tough but flexible silicone technology, Dow Corning’s conformal coatings promote extended service life and enhanced reliability for your PCB components and assemblies. Our industry-leading solutions have delivered proven protection for decades against moisture, service environment and a variety of harsh operating conditions including
a wide range of temperatures – from -45°C to 200°C.

Silicone conformal coatings from Dow Corning fall into two categories:

  • One-part moisture-cure solutions encompass room-temperature vulcanized (RTV) elastomeric or elastoplastic coatings.
    • RTV elastomer coatings protect delicate electronic architectures from environmental contamination and mechanical stress. Higher viscosity grades are suitable for pin/solder joint coverage and thin-section encapsulation.
    • RTV elastoplastic coatings deliver tough, resilient, abrasion and moisture resistance against various forms of contamination, and many carry recognition from Underwriter Laboratories , Mil Spec and IPC-CC-830. They are appropriate for rigid and flexible PCBs, ceramic and hybrid circuits and other components.
  • Heat-cure conformal coatings: cure in minutes to yield a transparent, flexible elastomeric film suitable for low-stress protection of PCBs with delicate, finer architectures. They are compatible with industry standard high-speed production of rigid and flexible PCBs.

After cure, Dow Corning’s silicone coatings deliver dependable, long-lasting protection. Their natural elasticity also helps minimize mechanical or thermal stress on delicate component leads. Additional select grades deliver tougher, more abrasion resistant coatings ideally suited for electronic printed wiring board applications.

Available in a variety of viscosities and cure chemistries, Dow Corning provide excellent unprimed adhesion to many substrates, including ceramics, metals, glass and filled plastics. Unlike competitive materials, many of our silicone coatings contain little or no solvents, minimizing the need for special storage, handling or ventilation.

More than a world-class materials supplier, Dow Corning is an expert and dedicated collaborator. If our product finder cannot identify an off-the-shelf solution that meets your precise specifications or if you are looking for application expertise and support please contact us.
