Repairability
In the manufacture of electronic devices, it is often desirable to salvage or
rework damaged or defective units. Gels can be manually removed to allow
repairs. Removal can be assisted using Dow Corning® OS Fluids or other
solvents to swell the gel to make it easier to remove the gel. The swelled
gel can then be removed, repair work done and the area repotted with new gel.
Softer gels have the unique ability to self heal. Over a period of time the
knit line in the gel will disappear and the gel cannot be separated without
tearing the gel.
In addition, if only one component needs to be replaced, a soldering iron may
be applied directly through the gel to remove the component. After the repair
is completed, the area should be cleaned and repotted with fresh gel.
