Applications for Silicone in LED's

From an applications perspective silicones are key to enabling high growth applications of LEDs including:

Due to their excellent thermal and photo stability silicones greatly extend the useful life of LEDs. This stability, and thus longer device lifetime, is critical for high reliability applications such as automotive. This can also be especially important for blue and white LEDs which can degrade other encapsulating or lens materials. These blue and white LEDs are key to capturing new markets and applications in general lighting where it is expected that LEDs will provide greater efficiency, longer lifetimes, and economic payback in replacing traditional lighting sources.

There are a variety of applications that have been initially targeted by high brightness LED manufacturers. Just some of the advantages of these devices include their lower power consumption, long service life and design flexibility as compared to traditional lighting systems.

Mobile Appliances

Keypad backlighting and backlighting of small LCD displays are the largest use of LEDs with increasing applications in cell phone camera flash modules.

Automotive Lighting

Today, HBLEDs are being designed into a variety of interior and exterior lighting applications. These can be map and reading lights or other courtesy lighting needs such as glove box or door exit illumination.  They have also been utilized for taillights and brake lights with faster turn-on times for improved safety. Dashboard and display backlighting are areas of high interest and usage by automotive companies due to the ability to customize the look and feel of their automotive brands with custom color sets. Increased uses as daytime running lamps and forward lighting are expected in the near future.

LEDs used as backlights can improve the quality of the image for large LCD television and computer monitor screens. A key advantage of LED backlighting for large area displays is the high accuracy and reality of the color rendition that is produced on the display image.

A large percentage of traffic lights in the United States now use LED’s rather than the older incandescent bulbs. LED’s are more energy efficient, have longer lifetimes than bulbs and are considered safer due to the higher brightness of the signals.
