LED Materials

High-Brightness LED packages are used for protection, light-extraction, thermal management and as molded lenses to direct light output.

Silicones have a long history of use as protective materials for semiconductor devices. Their optical clarity and stability make them particularly useful for use on high-brightness LEDs. Optical-grade silicones are currently used in commercial production of LED devices. Silicone elastomers are well known for their stress-relieving nature and can also be useful in the production of such devices. Silicone gels offer even greater stress relief.

When applied as encapsulants surrounding LED chips, silicones increase light extraction by more closely matching the refractive index of the chip surface.

Silicone resins are used commercially to form HBLED lenses. Micrometer-sized features can be replicated on the lens surface for benefits in directing light output for various LED applications.

Silicones are increasingly used for thermal management. Very low thermal resistance can be achieved by using special filters while maintaining low-stress properties.

If you need a material:

Consider products:

To be used in stress-sensitive applications

With higher penetration or lower gel hardness values or with lower durometer values for elastomeric products

To form a lens over an LED device to direct the light output

Molded from silicone resins such as SR-7010

For environmental protection of LED devices from moisture and other contaminants

That are silicone gels or elastomers

With a firmer surface or bulk properties

That have higher durometer values for elastomeric products or are designated as “resins”

With excellent clarity for light transmission

That are transparent

To minimize losses of transmitted light

That match the refractive index of the substrate

To maximize heat dissipation

That are thermal interface materials, either wet dispensed or cured pads and films

For use without the need of mixing

That are one part

For use on LED marker lights

Such as GT-1020 Sealant Pads with a nontacky rubber backing on one side
