High optical reflectance that won't fade under heat

The demand for brighter, more efficient LED light sources is challenging solid-state lighting designers to find innovative new reflective materials. The challenge is twofold: candidate reflective materials must help extract every possible lumen from the LED architecture, and they must withstand the increasing temperatures and lumen densities of today's high-brightness LED light sources.

Many are turning to Dow Corning and our expanding portfolio of optically reflective silicone materials. The remarkable thermal- and photo-stability of our reflective silicones introduces new possibilities for enhancing efficiency and quality across the entire LED lighting value chain, from die packaging to finished lamps and luminaires.

LED packaging solutions
Improving reflectivity begins at the source - the LED die packaging. However, because packaging materials are located so close to the heat of the LED die, high thermal- and photo-stability is nearly as critical as high reflectivity.

Unlike conventional organic materials, our reflective silicones will not physically or optically degrade after prolonged exposure to high lumen density or temperatures reaching 200°C. As a result, they can help ensure excellent lumen maintenance over the expected lifetime of an LED packaging.

Our reflective packaging materials also offer improved reflective properties compared to commonly used metals such as aluminum. And their excellent moldability under a wide array of processing options offers expanded design and manufacturing flexibilities over both metal and many organic LED packaging materials.

LED lamp and luminaire solutions
Dow Corning's white reflective silicone materials provide new options for improving the reliability, quality and efficiency of LED lamps and luminaires. These new materials deliver outstanding mechanical, thermal and optical stability at temperatures exceeding 150°C. and they sustain high reflectivity and mechanical performance over the expected course of an LED lamp or luminaire's lifetime.

Easily processed, silicone white reflector materials are suitable for injection or compression molding techniques, and potentially even spray-on coating applications. Their excellent moldability not only expands manufacturing flexibilities, it introduces new options for overmolding optical and reflective parts together in one process to reduce assembly costs. In addition, Dow Corning silicone white reflective materials enable fabrication of complex shapes and microscale features, offering new possibilities for shaping light and maximizing LED lamp and luminaire output.
