Silicones enable LED manufacturing

Dow Corning silicone applications for LED assemblyThe benefits of Dow Corning's optical-grade silicones do not end at the design table. With over 70 years of experience developing silicone-based solutions for cutting-edge applications, Dow Corning offers today's LED industry unmatched experience and know-how for LED module, lamp and luminaire assembly.

We bring more than just an industry-leading portfolio of assembly materials – such as silicone adhesives, pottants, encapsulants and optical materials. As a dedicated innovation leader, Dow Corning also brings proven process and application expertise, a reliable global supply base, and world-class customer service.

The combined manufacturing flexibilities that silicones afford can help LED lighting OEMs lower the total cost of ownership of their products. Available in a range of viscosities and cure chemistries, our LED materials achieve good flow and reproduction in virtually all processing techniques, from injection molding to casting and cavity molding. In addition, innovations such as Dow Corning® Dispensable Thermal Pads even allow manufacturers to quickly and precisely print our materials in controllable thicknesses on complex substrate shapes.

Dow Corning® Moldable Optical Silicones extend manufacturing flexibilities further. Able to serve as both an encapsulant and optical element, these advanced silicones process at far lower temperatures than glass or plastic materials and, therefore, less energy to fabricate solid optical parts.

Also, unlike plastics, Moldable Silicones don't need to remain in the mold for long periods to prevent warping, helping to reduce cycle time – particularly for large parts. Shorter cycle times can often translate into lower cost since the length of time a part remains in the machine can represent an important percentage of its total cost – depending on the mold, optical part design and other processing factors.

The natural high heat resistance of many Dow Corning® brand silicones easily withstands the extreme reflow temperatures of lead-free solders used to assemble LED packaging and surface mounts. Combined with their very low moisture absorption, this thermal stability allows silicones to withstand the multiple processing steps necessary to fabricate finished LED lamp and luminaires.

More than a world-class materials supplier, Dow Corning is an expert and dedicated collaborator. If our Product Finder cannot identify an off-the shelf solution that meets your precise specifications, our expert application engineers will work with you to understand your application and identify how to best solve your needs.
