Dow Corning Silicone sealant applications for LED lightingLED environments are becoming more demanding, inside and out.

Within LED packages, temperatures are rising as the market calls for higher light output from more compact designs. Meanwhile, LED lighting is penetrating more outdoor applications, where sensitive components require superior protection against ingress of moisture and dust. The convergence of these trends has challenged conventional LED encapsulants, which can perform less reliably when exposed to thermal extremes.

In contrast, silicone coatings, encapsulants and adhesives from Dow Corning offer the right balance of thermal stability and powerful adhesion to form strong, flexible, durable seals that protect high-brightness LEDs from environmental contamination. Our silicone coatings seal and protect LED solder joints to circuit boards, while our silicone adhesives and encapsulants offer protection much higher on the legs of the LED device.

Available in a variety of viscosities and cure chemistries, Dow Corning's high-performance silicones deliver excellent unprimed adhesion to a variety of common substrates including ceramics, reactive materials and filled plastics. This ensures excellent physical protection across the entire spectrum of LED applications, from chip level materials to outdoor lamps and luminaires operating at temperatures from -45°C to 200°C.

In addition, optical silicones from Dow Corning expand options for LED designs that require encapsulants to double as lensing elements. These optical-quality materials deliver refractive indexes upwards of 1.5, and will not delaminate, crack or yellow at temperatures exceeding 150°C. In addition to optimizing optical efficiency, these materials enable a strong, thermally stable seal that can extend the overall quality and lifetime of advanced LED designs.
