New Screw Tester Technology in Wiesbaden


The Molykote test field in Wiesbaden makes the startup with a new solutions technology. The lab team in Wiesbaden implemented a "New Screw Tester technology" from German company Schatz AG.

Molykote Pastes and Anti-Friction Coatings are high performance lubricating products, and are the most economic way to protect contacting metal surfaces.  This is accomplished by creating a thin but solid lubricant layer that keeps the metal surfaces apart.

Friction stability and quality of the Molykote Pastes and Anti-Friction Coatings are determined on the most modern test equipment. Strict performance bands are allocated to specific applications.

For bolted assemblies, the principal considerations for the optimum interplay of torques and clamping forces are the coefficients of friction in the bolts.  Analyzing these coefficients requires accurate sensors with multi-component data acquisition, a laboratory system with controlled motors and versatile, easy-to-use software to control the process and evaluate the results of the measurements.

The combination of Schatz Analyze and testXpert successfully combines a link between sophisticated technology for local measurement of torques and angles of rotation during bolted assembly and suitable evaluation software.

With the addition of specific control process and evaluation modules for determining the coefficients of friction of coated bolts, this program package provides optimum performance in a wide variety of applications.

The new technology makes it possible to measure coefficient of friction for M6 to M24 bolts.

Large and small screws

In combination with the hardware that has been newly developed for the purpose - consisting of multi-component sensors for individually analyzing head friction, thread friction and clamping force, the system controller, the drive motor and the mechanical fixture - this led to the development of a versatile testing system that can handle practically every measurement task involving torques, forces and rotation angles. Besides these applications, the system can also readily be used to perform complex tasks that extend beyond measuring these basic parameters, such as determining the moments of friction in a differential gearbox, functionally testing actuators, and testing the yield strengths and sustained load capacities of tools.

A user-friendly interface assists the operator in organizing tests and test samples. Freely definable test sequences allow even complicated test procedures to be implemented.

Molykote has delivered a solution to allow Statoil (Norway's government-run oil company) to achieve such standardized tightening techniques by using this special testing equipment on the bolts to establish the correct tightening regime in conjunction with the right Molykote product.
