Dow Corning Employees’ Second Annual ‘Hairy for Charity’ event raises $1,000 for local food pantry
More than 40 Dow Corning employees recently used facial hair to raise $1,000
for a local cause. As part of the second annual “Hairy for Charity” event,
employee participants added beards and mustaches to their appearance in an
effort to support the East Side
Soup Kitchen in Saginaw County.
After a light-hearted hallway conversation turned into the “Hairy for
Charity” event in 2010, employees in the Great Lakes Bay Region decided to keep
the momentum going this year.
“This has been a fun way for us to work together and support our community
while having fun,” said Kyle Schrauben, Dow Corning Business Process Analyst
and founder of Hairy for Charity. “This is the second year Dow Corning
employees have participated in Hairy for Charity and it keeps getting more
successful. We look forward to continuing the tradition, with donations staying
local to those in need.”
Each participant made a $20 contribution, committing to growing facial hair
for three weeks. The experience and progress was shared and documented
among participants using an internal employee blog.
The money raised during this year’s “Hairy for Charity” will be donated to
the East Side Soup Kitchen in Saginaw County. The Soup Kitchen strives to
provide a nutritious meal for those visiting the facility. Funds raised in 2010
were contributed to the Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Network’s Backpack Buddies
Program, providing weekend backpacks filled with nutritional food to area
elementary students.
The team members plan to participate in the event again next year, with
hopes to involve as many Dow Corning employees as possible.
