Dow Corning Carrollton site sponsors ‘4 Mile Outdoor Classroom’

4 Mile Outdoor ClassroomCarrollton, KY: During the week of May 14, more than 600 students, teachers and volunteers visited the “4 Mile Outdoor Classroom” sponsored by Dow Corning’s Carrollton, Kentucky site. Dow Corning and the Carroll County school district have collaborated to support the classroom for the past 15 years. Thousands of children have visited the 218-acre property during that time, receiving hands-on education in an outdoor setting.

Various student groups visit the classroom five or six times during the school year. Activities have included planting pumpkin patches, growing mushrooms in dead tree trunks, visiting the amphitheatre, butterfly gardens, hiking trails and using the walking bridge over the creek.

On May 15, 150 fourth graders from Cartmell Elementary School attended “Environmental Career Day” at the outdoor classroom. Students visited seven stations, each with a guest
speaker and hands-on activity. Topics included wind energy, planting trees and solar energy. Students also had the opportunity to become archeologists for the day by sifting through rocks and sediments to find fossils.

“I was simply astonished to see the work and organization of the teachers and volunteers for the fourth grade visit,” said Carrollton Site Safety Training Coordinator Linda Jo Davis. “The opportunity for the students to learn in this environment is wonderful, and the children will remember their experience for a lifetime.”

Environmental Associate Sharon Spears spoke to the student groups about safety and the importance of treating the environment with care.

“It is great for the students to see us volunteers as people who work and make a difference in their community,” said Spears. “We stress that these students are our future leaders and will have an impact on the environment someday.”

Davis said that the classroom has become a tradition of collaboration between the Carrollton site and the Carroll County school district.

“Many of the school teachers are children of retired Dow Corning employees, and some of the students’ parents and grandparents work on site,” said Davis. “It is exciting to know that my children attended the classroom when they were in school, and years later five of my grandchildren are still able to visit.”
