Dow Corning Greater China President Appointed AICM Chairman
Shanghai, China –Jeremy Burks, Dow Corning’s Greater China President,
has been appointed Chairman of the Association of International Chemical
Manufacturers (AICM) effective January 2013.
Burks’ new role at AICM is consistent with the company’s ongoing pledge to
embed sustainable principles throughout its operations as well as its wider
efforts to encourage the adoption of Responsible Care® - a global initiative
providing the framework for managing a company’s Environmental, Health and
Safety (EHS) – in China’s chemical industry.
“AICM is dedicated to bringing the best international practices to China’s
chemical industry and it continues to develop Responsible Care principles in
parity with the global industry,” said Burks. “The principles of responsible
manufacturing and use of chemicals are already guiding the local chemical
industry toward a new era of sustainability.”
As the President of Dow Corning Greater China, Burks is responsible for the
company’s corporate governance, compliance and leadership development in the
Greater China region. He also currently leads the company’s Greater China
Council that is responsible for developing and executing the company’s business
strategies in China. Since November 2011, he served on AICM’s Boards of
Directors which is a leadership team that brings an extensive knowledge of
leadership, management and development in the chemical industry to China. Burks
is also actively involved in the community and was recently awarded a Silver
Magnolia Award by the Shanghai government in recognition of his ongoing
contributions to the city.
“Responsible Care has played a vital role in Dow Corning’s global values,
and in China, our commitment to responsible development is evident in our most
recent expansion at the Songjiang site that minimizes waste, reduces
environmental footprint through less use of solvents and on-site resources
recycling,” added Burks. “Dow Corning is continually committed to bringing
innovative technology and setting a high standard for the silicone industry in
China. As one of the two sponsoring members on AICM’s Responsible Care
Committee, we further endeavor to inspire and support our industry colleagues
to manufacture and provide products in a responsible way.”
Dow Corning first pledged its commitment to the Responsible Care initiative
in 1989 in the US and later promoted its global implementation in 1997. With a
strong code of environmental conduct, the initiative provides the framework for
managing the company’s EHS efforts. The company’s Zhangjiagang integrated
silicone manufacturing site strictly adheres to international EHS standards
since its ground-breaking. To date, it delivers high reliability and safety for
all employees while focuses efforts on minimizing waste generation as well as
reduces overall environmental footprint.
The company also regularly communicates with local communities and industry
colleagues to raise awareness about EHS best practices and environmental
protection in China. Burks recently participated in an AICM e-Learning session
aimed at reinforcing the importance of protecting the environment, safeguarding
employees’ health and safety, as well as upholding the chemical industry’s
reputation as providing safe places to work.
AICM is an industrial organization which represents more than 50 major
international chemical companies with significant business operations in China.
It is dedicated to bringing the best international practices to China and
contribute to the sustainable growth of its chemical industry through the
promotion of Responsible Care® and cost-effective, science and risk-based
policies.
