Dow Corning Recognized as a Best Company for Working Moms

Dow Corning Corporation was named one of the “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” by Working Mother magazine for the fourth consecutive year in 2008.

The magazine recognized Dow Corning for its commitment to family-friendly benefits such as flextime, compressed work weeks and telecommuting, child and elder care resources, paid adoption and paternity leaves, and on-site fitness centers, which the company has at many of its sites.

“Working parents are an important part of the Dow Corning family, and we are honored to once again to be named to this prestigious list,” said Stephanie Burns, Dow Corning’s chairman, president and CEO.  “Dow Corning will continue to support our employees’ work-life effectiveness, which enables us to attract and promote diverse talent while retaining engaged employees who contribute their best – and are successful – at work and in their personal lives.”

Dow Corning On-Site Fitness CenterStacie Alderton, a working mom and supply chain scheduler at Dow Corning’s Midland, Mich. plant, has lost 115 pounds since starting a workout program at the company’s fitness center. “My manager agreed to let me flex my work hours to start an hour later to accommodate my workouts – and there went my last excuse for not exercising.  I’ve reached my goal and feel fabulous. There isn’t another company I’d rather work for,” said Alderton.

“The economy is not going to alter the commitment of Dow Corning to working mothers, because they've made family-friendly policies a part of their corporate DNA,” said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media. “Supporting families is a vital part of their culture and not just an added benefit.”

Added Suzanne Riss, editor-in-chief, Working Mother magazine, “Dow Corning knows that its investment pays for itself through employee loyalty and it realizes that productivity depends as much on satisfied staffers as on smart processes. By helping employees manage their work/life demands, Dow Corning is creating a highly motivated workforce.”

Methodology:

Dow Corning was selected for the 2008 Working Mother 100 Best Companies based on an extensive application with more than 500 questions.  The application included detailed questions about workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more.  It also checked the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them.  Seven areas were measured and scored:  workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs, and company culture.  For this year's 100 Best, particular weight was given to family-friendly policies, flexibility, leave policies and benefits for part-timers.
