Dow Corning Employees Extend Helping Hand to SOS Children’s Village Chengdu
Chengdu, China – As part of Dow Corning’s “Inspiring the Future”
Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, representatives from the company
today presented an employee donation of nearly RMB 120,000 to the SOS
Children’s Village Chengdu, which aims to establish a long-term relationship
with children in the Village by improving the quality of their lives while
paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.
This initiativehas drawn support from local and the US government
departments with Michael Toyryla, Consul of US Consulate General in
Chengdu;Zhou Lianghua, Party Secretary Bureau of Civil Administration of
Chengdu Municipal Government; Song Zhengxiang, Secretary General of Chengdu
Charity Federation and Tao Gang, International Affairs Division, Department of
Commerce Sichuan in attendance.
“Dow Corning takes corporate social responsibility very seriously and
improving the quality of life in our communities as well as supporting social
advancement have become vital parts of our DNA,” said Jeremy Burks, Greater
China President of Dow Corning. “I am delighted to see that the initiative
continues to grow from the ongoing support of our dedicated China employees as
we extend our volunteerism culture to Chengdu. This effort signifies our
commitment to our community in the western region of China.”
The SOS Children’s Village Chengdu, opened in 1997 andjointly supported by
SOS Children’s Village International and local government, focuses on helping
abandoned and orphaned children through family-based child care. With 116
children currently living in the village, Dow Corning’s donation aims to enable
the organization to continue fulfilling its mission to improve the living and
learning environment for the children by rebuilding local facilities as well as
purchasing sporting equipment for the football team. In addition, Dow Corning
volunteers provided English classes on-site to develop children’s linguistic
talents while enriching their cultural lives in the village.
“We are thankful for these contributions to our community,” said He Sheng,
Head of SOS Village Chengdu. “By introducing our children to professionals from
all walks of life, we hope this will foster long-lasting relationships that can
have a positive impact on the children’s future development.”
“Inspiring the Future” program is a local initiative launched by Dow Corning
in 2010 that aims to establish a long-term relationship with children from
low-income families or in need in the community. The program has donated
educational resources to several schools in Shanghai Zhangjiang and Songjiang
in the last two years.
Operating in China for nearly four decades, Dow Corning is committed to
contributing to its surrounding community. In 2008, Dow Corning Greater China
matched employee donations to victims of the severe earthquake in Sichuan.
Local talents have also contributed their expertise through programs such as
the “Fascinating Silicone in Life” Dow Corning Science Day program, which
incorporates scientific experiments for students and strives to educate and
inspire young people about science and technology.
Dow Corning established its Chengdu office in 1998, tapping into the growth
of the western region of China market.
