Dow Corning wins safety award from prestigious international chemical engineering organization

Midland, Mich. – The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) presented Dow Corning with its 2012 Safety Award at a reception in Vancouver, British Columbia. Dow Corning was recognized for its “innovative effort to deliver safety success through exemplary performance in developing methods to identify, assess, manage, and control risks,” as demonstrated by the company’s focus on becoming a highly reliable organization.

The successful Dow Corning project centered on the idea that companies with an excellent performance in traditional safety metrics could still be at risk if other process safety program aspects are not managed effectively. Dow Corning created a culture shift through education, communication and work process changes, reaching almost 12,000 employees worldwide.

“As a global leader in our industry, we are committed to the safety of our employees and communities in which we’re based,” said Mike Snyder, director, safety and industrial hygiene. “This recognition highlights the fact that we are making significant progress on becoming a highly reliable organization and seeing results from our efforts.”

The IChemE awards were presented as part of the Canadian Chemical Engineering Congress organized by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE). Guest speakers at the reception included IChemE deputy CEO Justin Blades, sustainability expert Roland Clift and the Institution’s Senior Ambassador in Canada, Shahana Buchanan.
