New Amine-Functional Siloxane Resin for Next-Generation Polysiloxane Coatings
Low-VOC, liquid crosslinking resin improves the thermal, weather,
chemical and corrosion resistance of high-performance paints and
coatings
MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, USA: With Dow Corning® 3055 Resin,
manufacturers of high-performance paints and coatings can formulate
low-VOC,
next-generation polysiloxane coatings with urethane, epoxy, polyester, alkyd,
amine and acrylic systems utilizing amine functionality.
Unlike moisture-cured polysiloxanes, Dow Corning® 3055 Resin
does not require titanate/tin catalysts or ambient moisture to cure. As a
result,
Dow Corning® 3055 Resin does not contribute to volatile by-products that
can cause film stress and adhesion loss. Polysiloxane hybrid coatings
formulated with Dow Corning® 3055 Resin have exhibited long-term
flexibility and improved chemical, thermal, UV, corrosion and moisture
resistance compared to epoxy and two-component polyurethane systems. Most
notably, adding Dow Corning® 3055 Resin improves the chemical resistance
and flexibility of polysiloxane coatings beyond that of a traditional epoxy
topcoat, demonstrating true synergy.
Furthermore, compared to two-component polyurethane coatings, polysiloxane
coatings with Dow Corning® 3055 Resin have similar physical
properties – but with better corrosion resistance. With such improved
performance, there is the potential to use a two-coat polysiloxane system
instead of the three-coat system needed with a two-component polyurethane
topcoat, which means reduced labor costs and faster return-to-service.
“We are excited about Dow Corning® 3055 Resin because it can be
used in a wide variety of protective coating applications,” said Jim
Stange,
Dow Corning’s North America Market Manager, Coatings. “What makes Dow
Corning® 3055 Resin especially intriguing is the potential utility for
performance improvement in applications outside of traditional protective
coatings, such as fire-resistant and intumescent coatings, composite polymers,
industrial adhesives, and high-temperature coatings.”
