Silicone Rail Bonding Technology from Dow Corning Enhances Efficiency, Cost Savings and Performance for Module Installers

The Dow Corning® brand silicone adhesives and sealants offer installers and integrators a cost-effective solution to mount solar modules while producing more durable rail bonding, lowering the installed cost per megawatt hour.

The silicone technology also provides ease of installation compared to processes that incorporate mounting hardware, such as brackets, clips and screws, while reducing materials and installation costs. In addition, these silicone sealants and adhesives can minimize theft and module damage.

Dow Corning® brand rail bonding solutions incorporate a silicone sealant or adhesive to structurally attach glass, metal or other PV module materials to the supporting structure (frame, rail or pad).

"Because rail bonding is a high-performance application, not all sealants are suitable," said Axel Giesecke, Dow Corning global marketing manager of PV module assembly and system installation. "Silicone sealants, such as those from Dow Corning, have been developed and tested specifically for structural bonding applications for the photovoltaic industry. Using structural silicone adhesives as an alternative to mounting hardware can help reduce costs and breakage."

The Dow Corning® brand structural sealants recommended for frame or rail bonding include Dow Corning® PV-8301 Fast Cure Sealant, Dow Corning® PV-8303 Ultra Fast Cure Sealant, and Dow Corning® PV-8030 Adhesive.

Solar arrays at Dow Corning Center, Midland Overall, Dow Corning rail bonding solutions provide proven performance as well as a more efficient way to install PV modules, including:

  • Protection from moisture, environmental attack, thermal and mechanical shock, breakage and vibration
  • UV stability
  • Added durability and structural strength
  • Adherence to glass and metal rails
  • Combined with equipment solution, provides an easy-to-use total process
  • Reduced cost of ownership
  • Quick cure time – for ease of use
  • Multiple application options
  • Warranties available with proper application

Dow Corning is one of the only companies in the world able to provide a wide range of silicon-based solutions throughout the PV value chain. These solutions meet critical needs such as improving the performance and durability of solar modules while reducing costs. As a leading silicon-based materials provider, the company is applying more than 65 years of experience to bring innovation and efficiencies to silicon-based materials that are an excellent fit for solar applications. With significant investments, including those in its joint ventures Hemlock Semiconductor Group, the company is using the power of silicon chemistry to bring solar energy to everyone, everywhere.

Dow Corning's solar experts will be available to discuss this and other product developments at the following upcoming trade shows:

  • European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, September 5-8, Hamburg, Germany, Hall B6, Stand B28
  • Solar Power International, October 17-20, Dallas, Texas, Hall C, Booth 2543
