Innovative Glazing Changing the Face of the World

Dow Corning Structural Silicone Glazing System Satisfies Safety and Aesthetic Requirements and Improves Energy Efficiency

Hong Kong, March 7th, 2012: Quality-conscious architects, contractors and building owners around the world are keen on applying innovative technologies and sustainable products to fulfill creative designs and extend building life-cycles. The structural silicone glazing from Dow Corning, a  world’s leading silicone and silicon-based technologies company, has been proven as the ideal solution.

Jean-Paul Hautekeer, Global Marketing Director from High Performance Building Solutions at  Dow Corning, highlighted the significant role played by structural glazing in today’s construction industry during the Vertical Cities 2012 Conference in Hong Kong

Vertical Cities

“In structural silicone glazing, structural silicone adhesive is used to attach glass, ceramic, metal, stone or composite panels to a building’s frame, creating a continuous flexible rubber anchor that absorbs stress and prevents air and water intrusion,” said Hautekeer. “Only silicone sealants possess the unique combination of strength, flexibility and weather resistance required for structural glazing applications.”

Since developing the first structural silicone glazing application in 1964, Dow Corning has been a global pioneer of the technology that has increased overall performance of buildings and enabled more creative designs. The company’s proven technologies and products are reliable at maintaining adhesive and cohesive strength in the face of harsh weather condition such as hurricane-force winds, ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes and acid rains. They are also testified to be able to remain high performance during earthquakes.

With global expertise and local onsite support, Dow Corning supported the façade construction of the Exchange Square in 1984, the largest structural silicone project of its time. Placing tropical heat, humidity, frequent heavy rains, typhoons, and the degrading effects of air pollution into consideration, Dow Corning 795 Silicone Building Sealant and Dow Corning 983 Silicone Glazing and Curtainwall Adhesive were applied. The building façade today remains as reliable as the day it was installed.

“The advent of the technology not only accelerated the development of sustainable buildings, but also fuelled architects’ imaginations,” said Hautekeer. “We are proud to see how much of our technology has changed the face of the world.”

From the first silicone structural glazing sealant to non-staining sealant technology, Dow Corning has provided the construction industry with groundbreaking solutions. All technologies and products undergo rigorous testing in the lab, in full-size mockups and on the job site before actual application. The company also provides on-site consultants to ensure correct application and improve efficiency.

As the company’s strategy transforms, Dow Corning has today become even better positioned to provide more innovative and integrated solutions that improve overall building performance, from façade assembling technology to coating products, renewable energy application to indoor energy efficiency improvement.
