MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, USA: Bethany Johnson and Mary Kay Tomalia from Dow Corning’s Beauty and Personal Care application engineering and technical service group will present technical posters on silicones for skin appearance and hair shine at the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) 2012 Technology Showcase, December 6-7 in New York City.

Johnson’s poster – “Age-Defying Hair Shine with Dow Corning® brand Silicones” – uses light-scattering image analysis, a method that correlates with shine sensory panel results, to document how select Dow Corning® silicones intensify shine and luster on many hair types, including gray hair.

“We found that when used in a water-in-oil leave-in conditioning formulation containing Dow Corning® 5200 Formulation Aid, our silicones performed better than selected commercial benchmarks for hair shine,” Johnson said. “They also enabled higher shine than an anhydrous formulation at the same or lower active content.”

Tomalia’s poster – “Visual Impressions: Dow Corning® brand Silicones for Enhanced Skin Appearance” – shows how different silicone mechanisms improve the appearance of the skin by softening the visual focus.

“Visual appearance is driven by the interaction of light with treated skin,” Tomalia said. “We developed a model to study how this light profile changes in different types of silicone thin films used in primers and fillers, anti-aging treatments, BB creams, and color correction products.”

Consumer-perceivable benefits of the silicone soft-focus mechanisms studied included smoothing of imperfections; sebum control; reduction in the appearance of wrinkles; and even, long-lasting color.

The SCC Technology Showcase, which is held in conjunction with the SCC Annual Scientific Meeting, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. December 6 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.December 7 at the New York Hilton and Towers Hotel, New York, N.Y.
