Dow Corning donates desks and benches to benefit students of local school
Nearly 250 students of the Zilla Parishad Prathamik School at Dhoksangvi
village near Ranjangaon (in Pune, India) will now be able to study more
comfortably, after Dow Corning, a
global silicone leader,
presented the school with 120 desks and benches.
Speaking on the occasion, Diane Kelly,
Dow Corning’s India president said, “Providing desks and benches for the
children to sit on is one of those small things that Dow Corning does that
make a big impact. Being able to sit at a desk and study will positively
benefit these children, and help them reach their full potential in the
classroom”.
Nirmala Sonawane, the principal of the school commented, “We are happy that
Dow Corning believes in giving to the community. Our village has had a
good relationship with the company over the past few years, and our
school-children have benefited from this mutual support.”
In the past, Dow Corning has supported the Dhoksangvi village school by
providing them with a science laboratory as well as a library, and also by
conducting regular Science Days for the children at the Dow Corning plant
in Ranjangaon.
Dow Corning’s community relations activities in India
Dow Corning in India is active in the communities where we live and
work – we have constructed anganwadis in the villages of Karegaon and Karde. In
Karde, we also installed a solar PV system
that provides electricity to the anganwadi, an adjacent village school and a
community ground. We worked with the village school in Dhoksangvi to provide
them with a laboratory and a library, and also conduct Science Days regularly
for local school children and their teachers.
We also participate in the Mumbai Marathon to
fund an educational NGO called ATMA, and work with Habitat
for Humanity to construct low-cost housing.
In September 2011, as part of Dow Corning’s Citizen Service
Corps, a group of ten Dow Corning employees traveled to Ujire (near
Mangalore, India) to work with the local communities on projects such as
improved methods for peeling areca nuts, sustainable energy solutions for
under-served households, and enhanced processes for a garment making
enterprise.
