Dr. Eric Vanlathem, physicist and senior application engineer, Dow Corning Electronics Solutions, will be presenting the “New Generation of Silicone Gels for Power Devices Encapsulation” during the PCIM Europe Conference on May 10, 2012. . 

Dr. Vanlathem will speak to the advances in Silicon technology for IGBT chips and recent progress made in the field of wide bandgap semiconductors, principally SiC.  The advances are pushing temperature limits for packaging materials to the extreme of what existing materials can afford. New silicone gels have been developed and evaluated following a three step approach: 

1. Optimization of existing toolbox of silicone chemistry brings silicone gels capable of withstanding 200°C,
2. a new approach is necessary in order to boost thermal performances, up to a temperature of 225°C, and
3. an out-of-the-box concept with new silicon-based polymers being designed targeting temperatures at or above 250°C.
