Plastics in Automotive

Dow Corning siloxane masterbatches can improve the scratch and mar resistance of thermoplastics, especially polyolefins.

Automotive designers use Dow Corning siloxane masterbatches for applications such as:

  • Instrument panels
  • Central consoles
  • Pillars
  • Partially painted bumpers
  • Fascias

Polypropylene compounds, in particular, have become the materials of choice for many of these applications. Polypropylene is widely used, for example, in hard automotive interiors or covers such as door trim panels.  Softer TPOs, polypropylene-based thermoplastic materials, with a high rubber content (>20%), are popular for parts such as airbag doors. The reasons for increased use of these compounds include:

  • Recyclability
  • Long-term durability
  • Safety regulations
  • Cost requirements
