More than any other coating technology on the market today, these coatings
offer more ways to orchestrate the best possible release level versus peel
speed, for any adhesive or substrate.
These coatings are best suited for use on:
-
Films
-
Calendered or coated papers with smooth surfaces
Solventless (100% solids) silicone release coatings have some important
advantages over solvent-based and emulsion coatings:
-
Fewer environmental, health, safety, and regulatory concerns
-
No expensive solvent recovery equipment required
-
Contain no carrier that must be driven off, so line speeds can be
faster
-
Less likely to damage films
Some drawbacks to consider are:
-
Need precision coating equipment to achieve the low coat weights necessary
to make an economical release liner (e.g. three-roll offset differential
gravure or multi-roll smooth roll coaters)
-
May require corona treatment or additives to achieve the same level of
anchorage as solvent-based coatings on films
-
Potential for soak-in on porous papers
Solventless delivery systems have been used successfully with platinum and
rhodium-based cure chemistries.
