Solvent-based

Solvent-based coatings have a long history of successful use on films and smooth, hard-surfaced papers with a high degree of solvent holdout.

Advantages:

  • Good coverage at very low coat weights
    • Economical
    • Use conventional coating equipment such as Meyer rods and direct gravures
  • Slightly "swells" some film surfaces, improving anchorage

Disadvantages:

  • Potential for film or paper coating damage
  • Soak-in on more porous paper stocks (When the solvent soaks in, it takes the silicone with it, leaving less on the surface where it's needed for effective release.)
  • More environmental, health, safety and regulatory concerns than solvent-free systems(However, if you already have incineration or solvent-recovery equipment in place and are operating within regulatory guidelines, solvent-based coatings can be an attractive choice.)

The solvent-based delivery system has been used successfully with platinum-based cure chemistries.
