Fiberglass and Composites

Throughout industry, from automotive to marine to aerospace, from electronics to building construction to sporting goods, Dow Corning® brand silanes figure prominently in the ever-increasing trend toward high strength plastic composites.

Silanes were first used commercially in fiberglass reinforced polymers for improved mechanical and electrical properties when exposed to moisture. As filled and reinforced composites have grown, silane applications have likewise broadened into a variety of end uses.

Coupling resins with fiber yields improved:

  • Resiliency of insulation boards
  • Wet strength retention and electrical properties of fiber reinforced plastics composites
  • Fiber strand integrity, protection and handling

Glass fibers contribute remarkable increases in physical strength to composites of numerous types, yielding many products competitive with metals. Manufacturers of all glass fiber reinforcements today provide products treated to improve performance, including coupling agents suitable for intended use. Silanes are the most common type and are applied as part of an overall treatment essential to the production processes.
