Worm gearboxes are an inexpensive way to provide high, single reduction gear ratios for machine drives and conveyors. They are most often used in food processing equipment and often placed in deep inside the machinery or overhead.
This inaccessibility makes maintenance difficult. Disposable gearboxes were installed. Instead of throwing away the gearboxes, however, the plant switched lubricants to the Molykote L-1146FG.
