Dow Corning® brand silicone pavement sealants are able to withstand excessive horizontal and vertical movement, have good weatherability and are easy to install with a short downtime and long service life. Dow Corning® 888 Silicone Joint Sealant and Dow Corning® 890SL Self-Leveling Joint Sealant are one-part silicone formulations that can be installed in new or old joints in Portland Cement Concrete pavement over a wide temperature range. In addition, Dow Corning® 890SL can be used on asphalt. Both sealants cure upon exposure to the air to form a permanently flexible, low- to ultra-low-modulus, high elongation silicone rubber seal. They are capable of withstanding extension of 100 percent and compression of 50 percent of the original joint width, making them ideal for use in joints which experience a high degree of movement. Dow Corning 890SL is an ultra-low modulus sealant which can be used to seal joints in asphalt pavements because it places very little stress on the asphalt itself while keeping the joint sealed.
To fully utilize these capabilities, the sealant must be properly installed in properly designed joints. This pamphlet provides the correct installation procedures including recommendations for good joint design and preparation, sample specifications for each product, backer rod installation, and a list of dispensing equipment and manufacturers, as well as the most frequently asked questions and answers.
