Dow Corning Foundation Donor Advised Funds Award Nearly $135,000 to Regional Schools and Charities in First Quarter
The Dow Corning Donor Advised Funds committee, a subcommittee of the
Dow Corning Foundation, approved nearly $135,000 in local grants during
the first quarter. The donations will be used to support a variety
organizations focused on enhancing educational opportunities and the regional
vitality of the Great Lakes Bay Region.
The Donor Advised Funds committee, which is comprised of employees from both
Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor, directs a total of $300,000 in
grants annually in the Great Lakes Bay Region through the Bay Area, Midland
Area and Saginaw Community Foundations.
The following non-profit organizations benefited from funding in Q1:
Bay City Public Schools
– Kolb Elementary – $8,000 toward the construction of a track
Family and Children’s
Services of Mid Michigan – $5, 599 for pregnancy education materials
Community Schools – Atkins Middle School – $5,815 to fund an after school
Habitat for Humanity – $5,000 for the purchase of safety equipment
Midland Northeast Little
League – $8,000 toward the development of a new baseball field
One Week One Street – $8,000 to improve a neighborhood park in Saginaw
Michigan Society of Women Engineers – $24,000 to support a summer STEM camp
Railroad/Girls on the Run – $16,000 for program expansion in Saginaw and
Hemlock Public School
District – $8,000 for the development of a science garden
Saginaw Valley State
University – $8,000 for a summer math camp
Castle Museum –
$5,000 to underwrite the cost of ‘Back to the Bricks’ featuring local
Bay Area Women’s
Center – $4,000 to upgrade kitchen facilities
The ROCK Center for
Youth Development – $24,000 to fund regional program expansion
Preschool – $3,000 for the purchase of communication devices for use in
special education classes.
The Dow Corning Foundation established these three Donor Advised Funds
in 2010, and has invested over $1,000,000 into the Great Lakes Bay Region via
this path since that date, in addition to its other work.
The Foundation’s mission is to improve scientific literacy by increasing
access to math, science and technology education at the pre-university level,
improve vitality and quality of life in communities where Dow Corning and
Hemlock Semiconductor employees work and reside and to increase the utilization
of sustainable, innovative technologies to benefit society.
